Okeford Fitzpaine is a parish and a village, situated in the Blackmore Vale, four miles south-east from Sturminster Newton. The parish of Sturminster Newton forms its north west boundary and going clockwise from the north other adjacent parishes are; Hammoon, Shillingstone, Turnworth, Ibberton, Belchalwell and Fifehead Neville. Under the Divided Parish Act (19thC) part of the parish of Belchalwell was added to Okeford for civil purposes. The ancient church of St Andrew is on a small rise just above the village. The registers date from 1592. |
There was also a Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapel here and a Wesleyan Chapel at Fiddleford. Fiddleford is a hamlet transferred in 1884 from Child Okeford to Okeford Fitzpaine. A National School was built in Okeford in 1873. The land is mainly pasture and comprises 3739 acres. In 1891 the population of the civil parish was 687 with 557 in the ecclesiastical parish. |
