	Shillingstone (whose ancient and ecclesiastical name is Shilling Okeford) is a parish and a village in the hundred of Cranborne on the River Stour and also on the main road from Sturminster Newton to Blandford. The Church of the Holy Rood is built of stone and has a chancel in the Early English style, a nave, north aisle, south porch and square embattled tower holding 5 bells, one dating from 1622. The church was restored in 1889 when the north aisle was added. The registers date from 1654. In the time of Edward the Confessor it is believed to have been a Manor of Harold, Earl Godwin, and at the Norman Conquest it was conferred upon the Norman family of Schelin, who are recorded as its Manor Lords in the Domesday Book. From them it took its name of Schelin (or Shilling)
There was formerly a Wesleyan chapel in the village. It also boasted a railway station on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) - the station still exists and now forms part of a heritage railway attraction (the Shillingstone Railway Project). In the centre of the village there is an old cross [seen on the left of the adjoining photograph]. There are remains of another cross in the churchyard and the base of a third on the Blandford road. Whitehill is a hamlet 1 mile south east and Gainscross 2 miles south east. The Church of England School was built in 1855 and enlarged several times. The population in 1891 was 546.
