After his death Alice and her son William, his wife Mary, and their children sought parish relief and this led to the church wardens and overseers of the poor applying for and being granted a removal order (not located) to the parish of Hollwell. An appeal however by the parishioners of Holwell was heard at the quarter sessions held at Sherborne on 12th April 1774. I have not really researched this family but i notice there is a gap between the birth of the twins in 1738 and the death of Frances in 1742 making it likely that Frances was born circa 1740. There is a baptism of a Frances the daughter of a John & Mary Score at Upwey on 5th Oct 1740 which is followed by baptisms for other children eg Richard 1742; William 1747; Joseph 1749 and Edward 1752. It seems likely that the family moved to Upwey to live from 1740 but when Frances died they had her buried back at All Saints with their other children.

09 Apr 1738 - Samuel MEADER of Holy Trinity[parish Dorchester] married Elizabeth HUNT of ye same (PR)
[Note:- Samuel MEADER The Younger (1715-1756) was the son of Samuel MEADER The Elder ((1685-1754) by his wife Ann TELSE (d.1720) and was baptised at HT on 18th Jan 1715/6. His wife Elizabeth was known as Betrty and is a beneficiary under the will of Jane GUEST the sister of her husbands father who died in 1754 when Samuel MEADER the Younger was executor of her will. Samuel died intestate at the age of 41 and was buried at HT on 22 Dec 1756. See wills index for Letter of Administration granted to Elizabeth his widow on 28th Jan 1757.

After Marriage their marriage at St Peters Samuel and Elizabeth raised the following children, all baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester.

    (1) Samuel bap HT 15th Nov 1738. Presumably died before 1748 as another child is named Samuel but no trace of burial.
    (2) George bap HT 26th Sep 1740 may have been buried HT 21 Apr 1743?
    (3) Ann bap HT 8th Apr 1743
    (4) John
    bap HT 15th Apr 1745
    (5) Samuel bap HT 12th May 1748. He applied at the age of 13 on 29th Sep 1761 to be an apprentice to a currier by trade called Edward CHAFFEY of Fordington. He was formally indentured on 9th Nov 1761.
    (6) Henry bap HT 13th July 1751. He was indentured when 12 years old on 2nd Dec 1763 to a glover by trade called James PARSONS of Dorchester.
    (7) Elizabeth bap HT 4th Apr 1754
    (8) William born posthumously 8th July 1757.
Elizabeth MEADER then appears to have remarried to Thomas ROBERTS from All Saints parish at Holy Trinity Church on 20th Dec 1761. Thomas ROBERTS was another Millwright and had been bound in 1754 in a Letter of Administration with her 1st husband Samuel MEADER the Younger to correctly administer the estate of Samuel's father Samuel MEADER The Elder, and was clearly therefore closely involved with the Meader family business. When father and son died in quick succession it makes some sense for Elizabeth who has now inherited that business, and is left with 8 children to support, to marry Thomas and secure their future. .

He was bound for the sum of £33 with Samuel's daughter Mary BRINE into a Letter of Administration when he was described as a 'Carpenter' of Dorchester. Charles LAKE was buried at St Peters Church on 17th Dec 1766 when he was described in the parish burial register as 'a Black' a shortened form of 'Blackamore'. which helps confirm his West Indian Origin. 10 Apr 1748 - Daniel CHAFFEY of Dorchester married Susannah JACKSON of the same [place] (PR)
[Note:- Daniel CHAFFEY (c1718-1756) I have not been able to locate his baptism which I think may point to his being a younger brother to Edward and James Chaffey who were sons from the marriage on 4th Apr 1710 of Edward CHAFFEY and Martha HERNE. Daniel had established his own cutlery business in Dorchester, probably having completed a 7 year apprenticeship himself, and was sufficiently well established that he was able to take on his own apprentice (Thomas the son of Edward Jones) on 4th Feb 1748. He was admitted as a Freeman of Dorchester on 14th April 1755 but soon died and was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 8th July 1756. Susannah CHAFFEY nee JACKSON (bur1763) his widow, appears to have then paid the duties for an apprentice (Wm Rickard) on 19th Jan 1757 when she describes her trade as that of a Joiner (carpenter). Described as being of St Peters Parish, Susannah remarried there on 27th Dec 1758 to James POOK. Follow link for more information Children from this marriage:-

10 Oct 1748 - Joseph BARTLET of Dorchester married Mary JACOB of the same (PR)

[Note:- The following is to record a series of facts which may have relevence to this marriage before they are lost. I am hoping other information will emerge making things clearer

I have not so far located Joseph's origins-- or Mary's, although I think she is probably related in some way to other members of the JACOB family in Dorchester who also end up as members of the Presbyterian Chapel.

There are 4 entries relating to a Joseph BARTLETT who is a Master Joiner [Carpenter] living in Dorchester where he is paying the duty due on Apprentice Indentures. This does not appear to relate to any other Joseph:-

      (1) 10th Oct 1753 - Joseph BARTLETT of Dorchester a Joyner for his apprentice Thomas GARRETT
      (2) 16th Aug 1777 - Joseph BARTLETT of Dorchester a Joiner for his apprentice John WHINNELL
      (3) 10th July 1779 - Joseph BARTLETT of Dorchester a Joyner for his apprentice George JEFFREY
      (4) 14th July 1781 - Joseph BARTLETT of Dorchester a Joiner for his apprentice John NEWBURY

There is a very long gap (over 10 years) before we can locate any children in Dorchester that might relate to this marriage. Those we have located are listed below. A search of non-conformist registers (RG4) did not reveal anyting. The absence of any children named Joseph or Mary may indicate that they settled somewhere else before returning to Dorchester. In this context I note :-

The marriage on 28th July 1772 at St Georges Church Fordington between a Joseph BARTLETT from All Saints Parish in Dorchester to an Elizabeth LESTER. It seems significant to me that they name their 1st child Mary Jacob Bartlett.

The first child below ,William Bartlett, seems to be a straightforward baptism at All Saints; the second child Fanny I have not located a baptism (may have died soon after birth?), burial OK at All Saints ; the third child, Jame's baptism, is at the non-conformist Presbyterian chapel in Dorchester. This did not have a burial ground so many were interred at All Saints. James baptism is the first time a Bartlett appears in their records. The second is for  Rebecca BARTLETT (1745-1822) who remained a spinster and was a long standing member of the Presbyterian Chapel even appointing the Rev. Able Edwards (1747-1826) whom she had known since 1769 (and Minister of the church from 1772-1813) as Trustee in her will. I am not aware of a direct relationship between Rebecca and Joseph. There were however other Jacob families having their children baptsied at the Presbyterian Chapel

Just to add confusion to chaos - From Quarter Session records it is clear that a Joseph BARTLETT , described as 'a poor Prisoner confined in the Goal for Debt', died from Smallpox and was duly buried at All Saints church on 19th Jan 1776. The next Bartlett death recorded at All Saints is a Mary BARTLETT buried on 28th Oct 1777. The information is too fragmentary to be very sure of anything, particulary the absence of children for so long after marriage, but thereafter there is a thread running through where they may have become non-conformist after returning to Dorchester encouraged by other members of Mary's family, Joseph is then imprisoned for debt and contracts, with others, Small Pox in the Gaol resuting in his death in 1766. For now I have assumed these two deaths are Joseph and Mary above.

[Note:- William JOHNSON (1726/7-1764) had been baptised at Stinsford on 7th March 1726 the middle of three sons of Richard & Mary JOHNSON. There is some indication that the family may have moved to live in All Saints Parish in Dorchester as his mother Mary JOHNSON was buried there on 13th Jan 1741/2. If they did, much later events suggest that his father Richard JOHNSON had returned to live back in Stinsford, possibly after te death of his wife. William became a Cooper by trade and had moved to live in nearby St Peters Parish in Dorchester where he met Mary GALE, another parishioner, whom he married as indicated above. On the 14th April 1755 William JOHNSON recorded as a Cooper was formally accepted as a Freeman of Dorchester, and the following year on 17th May 1756 was succesful enough to be able to take on a 16 year old apprentice named William BARTLETT. On 13th Sep 1760 he took on a second Apprentice named John TULLIDGE.

    Children from this marriage:-
      (1) Mary Johnson (1754-1836) Bap All Saints Church Dorchester 5th Sep 1754; Married James BONNETT (1754- 1805) a baker from Fordington in, by then, her parish of All Saints Church in Dorchester on 13th Aug 1778. They lived in Mill Street in Fordington after marriage where they raised their family. James was clearly very succesful as he owned several properties there. He and his family had returned to All Saints to live by 1804. James BONNETT wrote a detailed Will at All Saints naming his children on 9th Feb 1805 and leaving his estate in trust with his brother-in-law Thomas Johnson for their and his wife's benefit making them joint executors. He died and was buried back at St Georges Church in Fordington (described in the burial register as being from Dorchester) on 12th April 1805. The Will was proved on 16th July 1805. Mary seems to have died in Axminster in Devon but her body was returned to All Saints for burial on 1st Feb 1836 when her age was given as being 80.

      (2) Thomas Jonson (1756-1831) bap All Sts 14th Oct 1756; Married to Mary BEDLOE at St Peters church 20th April 1786 and they had 9 children (Follow link for more info.) On the 16th Dec 1771 aged 15 he was Apprenticed to a Cabinet Maker named Samuel CORP of Dorchester. Thomas is being referred to as an Innholder in the Will of his brother-in-law James BONNETT in 1805 and his name is in the 1830 street directory published by Pigot's in 1830 as the landlord of The George Inn on the North side of High West Street in Dorchester. Thomas was buried St Peters Church Dorchester Oct 1831 leaving a Will dated 4 Sep 1831 which was Proved on 8th Jun 1832

      (3) Elizabeth Jonson (1762- ?) bap All Sts 28th Feb 1762 ; No further information traced.

      (4) John Johnson (c1764-1766) buried Stinsford 27th June 1766

William JOHNSON (1726/7-1764) his death is recorded in the Stinsford Parish Register in the year 1764 as:- " Febry 19th buried Wm JOHNSON of the Parish of All Saints in Dorchester". The very next entry in the register is on March 12th when his father Richard JOHNSON was buried. There is one further entry at Stinsford :- "Buried John the son of Mary JOHNSON, Widow June 27th 1766". The absence of a baptism at Stinsford or Dorchester suggests that their son John was probably born shortly after the death of her husband circa late 1764. Mary left with her husbands busniess to run and two surviving children then remarried to the apprentice William BARTLETT (1740-1780?) who was now fully qualified as a cooper and age 26 and able to take over the business. Although her fathers will is very poor quality what I can read does not appear to refer to Charlotte which suggests she did die prior to 1837. His will seems to end with £1,000 bequest to William her elder brother. He died in 1851 leaving a long will whicjh also does not refer to her.

He was elected Constable of St Peters in 1758 - signing the Militia return for that year. He had been baptised at All Saints church in Dorchester on 13th Aug 1740. At the age of 16 on 13th May 1756 he was Apprenticed to a Cooper by trade named William JOHNSON (1726/7-1764) follow link for more information about him and his family. William BARTLETT would have qualified at the end of a seven year Apprenticeship in May 1763. William JOHNSON died the following year and Mary JOHNSON nee GALE (c1728-1797) now a widow and left with the business to run and two children to support married William BARTLETT by licence as shown above. 22 Nov 1767 - Charles CHURCHILL of Holy Trinity [parish Dorchester] married Dinah PHELPS of St Peters [parish Dorchester] (PR)

(Note:- Charles CHURCHILL (1738-1829): His age at death was recorded as 91 when he died in 1829 making him born about 1738. He did not leave a will and no letters of administration were issued for his estate so he does not seem to have died possessed of much wealth, property or land. He was not baptised in Dorchester or Fordington as the few births there are all accounted for in other families. We do know that he was apprenticed to the cordwainer William PHELPS of Dorchester on 1st Dec 1753 when he would have been aged about 15. The Churchill's of Colliton and Piddlehinton sent their sons to private schools or onto University - not to become shoemakers - whilst apprentices generally came from tradesmen, merchants, husbandmen or yeomen. William Phelps was included in the 1758 Militia Listing as a shoemaker of Dorchester living in St Peters Parish. Charles although over 18 is not listed, but may have been exempt as an apprentice. William Phelps appears to have been buried at St Peters on 16 Feb 1800 leaving a will dated 01 Jun 1799 which was proved on 27 Feb 1800. He is likely to have been related to Dinah Phelps but I have nor so far ascertained how. This background makes it likely that Charles was the third child from the marriage of Charles CHURCHILL who married Mary COSINS at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 08 Jan 1733/4. Unlike his siblings he did not marry or die in the parish of Winterborne St Martin where the family lived.

Dinah Phelps was the youngest of eight children of Joseph PHELPS (d.1750) by his wife Elizabeth nee CHEEK [CHICK] who married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 7th Feb 1713/4. Dinah had been baptised at St Peters on 16th May 1732 so was at least 35 years old at marriage. Her age may therefore be why they only had 2 children. When her father died in 1750 he bequeathed to her a gold ring from her aunt Avis Thomas deceased, and £50,and his 2nd best bed as well as a share of the remaining household goods. Dinah CHURCHILL nee PHELPS (1732-1782) was buried at St Peters church either on 16th October or 28th November 1782. Charles CHURCHILL lived to a ripe old age being buried at St Peters Church on 7th Feb 1829 when his age was recorded as being 91. His elder brother John also lived to be 90 years old. Charles & Dinah had two children:-

    (1) John Churchill (1769- 1801) bap HT 29th Apr 1769, he married at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 6th May 1790 to Ann SWYER when one of the witnesses was a Joseph Phelps, if not his uncle, probably a close relation of his mothers. John and Ann had a daughter they named Dinah Churchill baptised at Holy Trinity church on 13th March 1791. She married when she reached the age of 21 to Henry PHILLIPS of St Mary's Church Rotherhide in the County of Surrey on 24th Dec 1812 at St Martins Church in Boadmayne which she gives as her own parish. One of the witnesses was Susannah Martha Swyer. John Churchill was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 13th Oct 1801.
    (2) Mary Churchill (1771-1771) Bap HT 28th Aug 1771, who was buried 2 days later at St Peters Church.

John Ensor Junior had been baptised at St Peters Church Dorchester on 13th Aug 1746; He became a Collar Maker by trade and moved to Sherborne to live but returned to marry in Dorchester. John took on another poor child Robert Gundry Pearce on 19th March 1785 when he was described as a collar maker and roper by trade. John Ensor described as a Collar Maker of Sherborne also appears in the Quarter Sessions Records held at Sherborne on 1st April 1785 (Image 2020) when he prosecuted a William Pope for decit and misadventure. The Quarter Sessions held at Bridport on 27th/28th April 1802 also refers to a case where Jane the wife of William Hardy of Sherborne was indicted for an assualt on John Ensor the elder (image 140) . John ENSOR wrote his will 7th March 1805 when he described himself as a yeoman and after bequests to his children left his estate to his wife Mary. John ENSOR Senior was buried at Sherborne on 25th Feb 1806 (the actual entry image 787 has the Latin abbreviation 'ux' meaning 'wife of' after it, but for some reason this scribe seems to use this to indicate that the wife is still living as other entries record ' widower' (or widow for women) John ENSOR Senior's will was proved on 12th Aug 1806. Mary ENSOR (1738-1813) in fact appears to have been buried at Sherborne on 20th July 1813 aged 75. Children from this marriage:-

    (1) John Ensor Junior bap Sherborne 26th Dec 1769; he married Mary Short at Sherborne 20th April 1791. They also had children in Sherborne eg John Abbot Ensor born 30th Jan & Bap 25th April 1792. (5) Ann Ensor bap Sherborne 1st May 1778 ; she married as a minor with parental consent to Richard Gumbleton at Sherborne on 7th Sep 1796. Witnesses were Edward, Elizabeth & William Ensor. Edward was probably her fathers brother, her uncle ; Elizabeth proabbly her mother as she was under age, and William possibly her elder brother. Richard Gumbleton was left £5 in Ann's fathers will in 1806.
    (6) Mary Ensor bap Sherborne 29 Mar 1780 She married Richard Francis; Mary left £100 in her fathers Will in 1806 for her own use and £5 to her husband.

31 July 1796 - Henry TOOZE married Susannah THORNE by Licence (CR) [Link to monumental Inscription in St Peters Church]
{Note:- Henry TOOZE (1767-1828) was to hold the commission of Barrack Master at Dorchester for thirty four years so he was in Dorchester from at least 1794. This is his marriage to Susannah THORNE (1762-1846) whose heritage is unknown. They only had two children as shown below. Henry TOOZE was buried at St Peters Church 21st May 1828 and left a will dated 13th May 1827 which was proved by his widow on 28 July 1828. It confirms he only had one living son and his widow inherited his estate for her life, his son having already been provided for, but was to inherit after her death. Children:-

    (1) Henry TOOZE (1801-1801) was probably born prior to 1801 as he was privately baptised. His reception into the congregation at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester is recorded in the parish register as being on 16th June 1801. This may have been because he was sickly as he was also buried there on 22nd Sep 1801.

    (2) John Randolph TOOZE (1801-1874) strangely he was baptised at St Peters Church on the same day that his brother was received into Holy Trinity - 16th June 1801. Both churches were of course administered by the same rector Rev. Nathaniel TEMPLEMAN MA (1727-1813) so perhaps this was a clerical error? On 4th Feb 1815 his father signed an indenture binding John as a Clerk for 5 years to Thomas SABINE of Mucklesford in Bradford Peverell in Dorset a Gentleman and Attorny of the Kings Bench at Westminster and a Solicitor of the High Court of Chancery. He married Mary Honour WHITE (1802-1873) at St Peters Church on 11 July 1826 and they lived at 29 High West Street in Holy Trinity where John was an audior of the Dorset County Hospital. They made him honoury Secretary of the Hospital by 1875. As a part of his business at Dorchester he was also the agent of the Scottish Widows Life Assurance Society

30 Jan 1797 - Charles ALLEN of Wareham married Mary BENNETT by Licence (CR)
06 Mar 1797 - John STEWART married Mary WHITE (CR)
10 Apr 1797 - John ROSE of the parish of All Saints married Jenny MOWLAM by Licence (PR)
[Note:- John ROSE (1767-1816) was arrested on 6th Feb 1813 for leaving his family chargeable to the parish for which he was sentenced to 1 months imprisonment. In fact he would probably have been placed in the House of Correction within the Dorset County Gaol in Dorchester and put to work for which he would have retained a part of his wages. They had for example a workshop making hats which was very succesful at this time. The importance in his arrest however is that we have a description of him. He was said to be 46 years old (i.e. Born c1767) a Sadler by trade and married with 7 children. There was probably another child to those listed below unless Andrew was a year or so older when he was baptised. He was also recorded as being 5 feet 2 inches tall with black curley hair and dark hazel eyes with a swarthy complexion. Unusally for this time there were no noticeable marks on his body. After marriage they settled in her parish of St Peters but moved to Holy Trinity c1803/4 before returning to St Peters in 1813 when his family became chargeable to St Peters. John ROSE died at the age of 50 being buried at Holy Trinity Church on 22nd Nov 1816 when his address was given as being South Back Street. He appears to have succesfully provided for his family for 16 years but his early death suggests his health was preventing him from continuing to do so.
