WHO
DEPARTED THIS LIFE, 26TH DECEMBER, 1836 AGED
75 YEARS. AT
THE CLOSE OF A LONG AND PAINFUL ILLNESS, BORNE WITH EXEMPLARY PATIENCE
AND CHRISTIAN FORTITUDE. ENDEARED TO HIS FAMILY AND CONNECTION; BY THE
UNOSTENTATIOUS DISPLAY OF THOSE VIRTUES WHICH ADORN THE HUSBAND FATHER
AND FRIEND HIS MEMORY WILL BE LONG CHERISHED IN THE HEARTS OF THE POOR
TO WHOM HE WAS A KIND AND LIBERAL BENEFACTOR. THIS
TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS BEREAVED WIDOW BY WHOM HE WAS DESERVEDLY BELOVED IN LIFE, AND DEEPLY LAMENTED IN DEATH, AS A TRIBUTE TO DEPARTED WORTH.

A MINISTER, FAITHFUL, ZEALOUS AND DEVOTED. HE
WAS SUPPORTED IN THE TRYING HOUR OF DISSOLUTION, BY A STEADY FAITH IN
THAT SAVIOUR,
WHOM IN HIS LIFE, AND PREACHING, HE LABOURED TO EXHALT. HE
DIED 16TH OCTOBER 1827, AGED 26 YEARS. TO
HIM “TO LIVE WAS CHRIST: & TO DIE WAS GAIN” MARK THE PERFECT MAN
AND BEHOLD

Verger’s staff was designed and made in memory of the long standing
Verger, Mr Harry Vey Cox, the village blacksmith, who also stoked the
coal fired boiler, wound the Church clock and rang the Church bells.
