The tree behind St Mary's is a Sequoiadendron Giganteum Wellingtonia in other words a Giant Redwood, it was once measured at 100ft in 1960 so now it is thought to be 112ft and 28ft in girth

!It's also thought to be a memorial to the once Revd  Thomas Lane Fox (d 1861) and benefactor who is buried just a few yards from where it stands.

John Young
 

Sacred to the memory of John Young and his wife Ann Young died February 16th 1763 aged 31 years. John Young died July 4th 1815 aged 76 years. This humble monument is erected as a token of grateful esteem by their affectionate niece S L BOWN

 

John Sweet
 

Sacred to the memory of JOHN SWEET Gent. who died 3rd March 1736 aged 62. Also ANN SWEET his wife who died 22nd March 1775 aged 77. Also two of their daughter ANN & SARAH. JOHN STANTON of Henstridge Gent. who out of respect to the famely caused this monument to be erected he died ye 13th April 1796 aged 67. Also BETTY STANTON his wife daughter of the above JOHN & ANN SWEET who departed this life in hopes of a better December 23rd 1801.

Near this place are deposited the remains of THOMAS DASHWOOD Gent who departed this life 23rd March 1784 aged 69. also of MARY his wife who departed this life 1st February 1789 aged 74. Also of MARY JAMES widow their daughter who died August 17th 1818 aged 70 years.

  Here underlyeth ye body of Hamnet Ward doctor of Pysick who dyed on the 7th day of August in the year of our Lord 1705 in ye 85th year of his age.

In loving memory of Edward Strange born December ** 1805 died June 26th 1876, Interred at the old Cemetery.

Also Tomazine his wife born September 23rd 1806 died July 31st 1886.

Also of Frank youngest son of the above who departed this life October **** 1897 aged 52 years.

Sturminster Postal Workers
  Sturminster Postmen outside Triangle Cottage on Goffs Close circa 1900 ?, taken behind the then old Post Office, they moved from those premises in 1895
Dead Mans Penny
  Dead Man's Penny for Wallace John Lydford d. 21 May 1916
Robert Lydford and his wife Elizabeth nee Francis b 1862 Sturminster Newton had two sons, Robert Reginald b 1892 Sturminster Newton and Wallace John b 1895 Sturminster Newton. Wallace worked at the Post Office at Sturminster Newton, as recorded in the 1911 census a messenger for the Post Office. Wallace would eventually sign up to fight in WW1 for The Post Office Rifles, sadly he was killed during a German attack at Ferme de Berthonval, Northern France. Initials: W J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Rifleman Regiment/Service: London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) Unit Text: 1st/8th Bn. Date of Death: 21/05/1916 Service No: 4206 Additional information: Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Lydford, of Station Rd., Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 10. Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL - Wallace's brother Reginald would sign up in 1914 for the Royal Engineers - number 31139, he was discharged in 1918 after serving time in Mombassa, India with the 31st Singling Co.
