Note in a later edition of the Reverend Hutchins’ “History & Antiquities of Dorset”:
“Peter Barker, omitted in Hutchins’s list of Stour Payne vicars, was also rector of the neighbouring parish of Stepleton, and author of “A Learned and Familiar Exposition upon the Ten Commandements – first delivered in severall sermons, and now published to the glory of God, and for the further benefit of His Church, by Peter Barker, preacher of God’s Word at Stowre Paine, in Dorsetshire.” The first edition of this book was published in 1624, and the second, “much enlarged by the author,” in 1633. It is dedicated “to the Right Worshipful the Deane and Canons of the Cathedrall Church of Sarum, my very good Patrons;” and is altogether undeserving of the entire oblivion into which it seems to have past. His learning and quaintness remind one strongly of the writings of his cotemporary Thomas Fuller, and the strings of old saws, and strange comparisons and anecdotes, both classical and familiar, with which he illustrates and enforces his sound Protestant doctrine, fully entitle him to rank with that still popular writer, and demand his restoration to a niche amongst the worthies of Dorset.”
