Pilsdon

Pilsdon St Mary's courtesy of http://www.peterwalker.info	Pilsdon is a hamlet and civil parish 6 miles north of Bridport, 7 miles south-west of Crewkerne and 5 miles west of Beaminster. The small church of St Mary's was almost entirely rebuilt in 1830. Built in the early English style it has a small western turret containing one bell. The village contains a house where the Royalist judge, Sir Hugh Wyndham, lived and which was once raided in the incorrect belief that King Charles was taking refuge there, he was in fact hiding at Sir Hugh's nephews house in Trent. Pilsdon is most famous for its hill. 'Pilsdon Pen' until recently thought to be the highest hill in the county at 909 feet is topped with an Iron Age fort thought to have been abandoned after the Roman invasion.
