Town Criers and Sergeants at Mace of Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis Town Criers Note - it appears that Lyme Regis first had a Town Crier appointed by William the Conqueror after 1066, details not known. 1859 - 1871 William LUCAS born at Lyme Regis in 1813 son of Thomas and Elizabeth Lucas. Married Susan TYPE at Chard, Somerset in 1835 and worked as a tailor and Town Crier - joined the Montague Lodge of Freemasons in 1862. His death is uncertain. 1875 - 1889 William LEGG - from Trade Directories in 1875, 1880, and 1889 - I was unable to find anything definite for William as Legg is a common name 1881 - 1911 George LEGG - born at Uplyme in 1840 son of Robert a farm labourer and Margaret Legg. Married Jane WATTS at Beaminster in 1864. Worked as a boot and shoe repairer - was Town Crier in the 1881 census - and he died at Lyme in 1915. 1915 - 1945 Walter ABBOTT born at Lyme Regis in April 1879 son of William a stone mason and Lydia. Married Annie PEARCE at Lyme in 1901. Worked as a labourer, then a gas stoker. In 1939 was Town Crier, Sergeant at Mace and a Special Constable. He died at Lyme in Nov. 1946. 1945 - 1968 Frederick W. GOLLOP born Lyme Regis June 1887 son of William Gollop a gardener and his wife Anne. Served in Royal Navy - was at Portland in 1911 serving to June 1922, and again from 1939 to 1944 at Devonport. He died at Lyme in January 1969. 1970 - 1977 George NORMAN 1977 - 1992 Richard FOX M.B.E. born in 1939 and ran the Cobb Arms Hotel along with other businesses in Lyme - left in 2006 to live in Portugal with his wife Marilyn. He died in May 2018. 1993 - 2011 Philip W STREET born about 1964. Worked for Westland Helicopters and moved with the company to France ending his stint as Town Crier. 2012 - 2023 Alan D. VIAN born in 1947 in Essex, son of Cyril D. Vian and his wife Betty M LAWRENCE who married at Taunton in 1946. Married Lynne PEACHEY in Buckinghamshire in 1970.
