Dorset Militia Ballot List 1798
Transcribed and donated to the OPC Project by Chris Bellers
Note - The Militia Lists are lists of
civilians between the ages of 18 and 45 who could be chosen by ballot to serve
in the militia. If chosen, they could find a substitute to serve in their place
by paying a bounty. Certain men were exempted for reasons such as age, height,
disability or having a large number of children (the parish would not want to
support these children if their father were killed). Millers and bakers were
listed so that the militia might be fed.
