Wills of Bere Regis residents proved by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (1348-1858)

Until 1858, all wills had to be (formally) proved by church and other courts. The Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the most important of these courts, dealt with the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales (what was originally the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury). These wills can be downloaded from the Documents online service of the National Archives for a small fee: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Note: this is not a complete list of wills made by Bere Regis residents. Wills may have been proven in other ecclesiastical courts, such as the Archdeaconry Court of Dorset or the Royal Peculiar of Sarum. From 1858 all wills were indexed centrally and this index is widely available at Record Offices, Probate Registries and LDS Genealogical Centres. |
