PHILLIPS Sidney Joseph Captain No. 136974 Royal Army Ordnance Corps attached to Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Born in Somers Town, Middlesex on 20th August 1887 son of Joseph Hales Phillips,
a musical instrument maker who died in 1940, and his wife Mary Ann Halden who
died in 1937. Sidney first married Louisa Neill on 26th March 1910 at Islington,
London but she died of a heart condition in 1913 and he then married Alice
Beatrice Coe on 23rd December 1914, also at Islington. In 1939 they were living
at Bell's Orchard, Wareham and Sidney was Manager of a sand and concrete company.
He died on 29th May 1944 aged 56, and Army records just say he was "Dangerously Ill,
then had Died" but gave no cause of death, which was registered at Sturminster
Newton Dorset, so I suspect he died at the military hospital there. He was buried
in grave No. C. J. 42 on 2nd June.
PICKERELL Thomas Regimental Sergeant Major No. 9373 Worcestershire Regiment.
Born in Dudley, Staffordshire about May 1866 son of Richard Pickerell, a miner who
died in 1890, and his wife Sarah A. Holden who died in 1912. I failed to find a
nything about his early military service, but he was a Sergeant on 27th March 1893
when he married Florence Walters (K/as Florrie) at Whittington, Worcestershire.
By 1911 he had retired from the Army and was a Club Hall Porter living at 95
Katherine Road, Bearwood, Birmingham. He died at Wareham Military Hospital on
14th December 1915 but cause of death not found. He was buried in grave
No. B. A. 17 on the 17th.
PURFIELD Henry Sergeant No. 3/ 8355 11th Battalion Devonshire Regiment .
Born in Camberwell, Surrey in the workhouse, son of Harriet Purfield, a servant
and single mother, who in 1874 married Charles Fuller, a car man and later a
parish sweeper who died in 1904. Harriet died in 1915. Henry only appears in
the 1861 census and I suspect he spent much of his life abroad. He travelled
to Argentina as a farm labourer in 1891 and returned in 1914 with Adelaide
Louisa Robinson, his wife, and children, so probably married there. He died on
23rd September 1915 at Wareham Camp, cause not known, and was buried in grave
No. B. A. 15 on the 25th. His probate to his widow on 11th November 1915 for
just £54 gave their address as 52 Princes Street, Babbacombe, Torquay,
Devon. The CWGC gave her later address as 37 Springfield Road, Torquay.
RANKIN Leo Vincent Private No. 1718 55th Battalion Australian Infantry A.I.F.
Born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1879 son of John William Rankin who died in March
1916 and his wife Mary Donoghue. CWGC has their address as 67 Bromley Street,
South Yarra, Victoria. Leo enlisted on 8th December 1915, when working as a clerk,
but his service record shows a number of instances of being "Absent without Leave".
He was diagnosed with varicose veins in both legs and moved from Calais, France
to the UK on 10th October 1916. Moved to Wareham Camp on 20th January 1917, he
was then diagnosed with Haematuria (blood in his urine) on 5th April 1917 and
moved to Worgret Military Hospital, Arne, Dorset, but died there of Hepatitis
on 10th May 1917, and was buried in grave No. B. D. 19. His Army record has a
later address from July 1917 for his mother of "Arundel" 86 Cromwell Road,
Hawksburn, Victoria.
RICHARDS Douglas George Private No. 1750 57th Battalion Australian Infantry A.I.F.
Born in Bromley, Kent in 1893 son of George William Richards, a warehouseman,
and his wife Louisa Berkshire. In 1911 he was living with his parents in Plaistow,
London, but then at some point he sailed to Australia as he enlisted in the A.I.F.
on 3rd February 1916. Was in Tel-El-Kabir, Egypt in June 1916, but moved to
France, sick, in July 1916. Recovered by 12. 8. 1916 but in November 1916 was
suffering from Trench Foot, and moved to UK on 7th November. Posted to Wareham
Camp on 20th January 1917, he was moved to Worgret Military Hospital, Arne,
Dorset on 2nd March 1917 suffering from pneumonia and died of that on 23rd
June 1917 aged 23. He was buried on the 27th in grave No. B. D. 18. His
parents were living at 38 Northern Road, Plaistow, London.
RIVERS Alfred William Private No. 545852 Royal Army Medical Corps.
Born in Woodnesborough, Kent in 1881, son of James Brown Rivers, a coachman in
1891, and his wife Seline Mary Johnson who died in 1904. It seems that he joined
the Royal Artillery in 1899 No. RA/40 and is missing from the 1901 census - maybe
serving abroad ? He married Emily Harriet Hall at Greenwich, Kent in January 1918,
but Army Effects say that he died of "illness" at Worgret Military Hospital,
Arne, Dorset on 14th October 1918 - was it Spanish Flu ? He was buried in grave
No. C. F. 24 on the 18th. His widow Emily was living at No. 132 Park Buildings,
Rotherhithe, Kent.
ROACH Charles Private No. 18791 10th Battalion King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.
His burial record says he was Born in Lambeth, London in 1888, but I think that
is an error. CWGC has no parents but says his wife lived in Liverpool, and he served
in the Lancaster Regt. suggesting he came from the north of England. I think he was born
in Runcorn, Cheshire in about January 1889 son of William Roach, a Life Assurance Agent
who died in 1900, and his wife Mary Bennett who died in 1907. He married Agnes Tisdale
at Wirral, Cheshire in January 1900, and in 1911 was a cab driver living with Agnes
at Hoylake, Cheshire. He died of an unspecified disease at Worgret Military Hospital,
Arne, Dorset on 12th March 1916 and was buried in grave No. B. B. 11 of the 14th.
Agnes was living at 30 Gordon Terrace, Aigburgh Vale, Liverpool, Lancashire.
RUSSELL Thomas Private No. 11348 9th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry.
Born about 1880, he married Clara Harriet Boorer at Lambeth, London on 3rd January 1915,
which gave his father's name as Joseph Russell deceased a labourer, but I could not
find more about his birth or family. Thomas died at Wareham Military Hospital on
1st April 1916, cause of death not found, and was buried in grave No. B. B. 13.
SHEA P - CWGC says this is his real name but he served under the Alias ROCKE.
I found a Patrick Shea Born in Ballymahon, Co. Longford, Ireland in 1891 or 1892
(not 1897 as per CWGC) son of John and Mary Shea, and working as a labourer there
in 1911. There is a Patrick Shea who enrolled in Leinster Rifles on 6th January 1909,
but Born in Shrule, Longford, Ireland - discharged 31. 1. 1916 at end of engagement ?
I found nothing about serving in Tank Corps No. 317621 (CWGC) or circumstances of his
death on 30th October 1918. He was buried in grave No. C. F. 26. Note also Patrick Shea
is a common name in Ireland.
SMITH John Sergeant No. 10292 9th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry.
Born in Everton, Lancashire in 1869 (per 1911 census) son of John Smith, a wheel chair
man in 1891 but died in July 1895, and his wife Jane Smith. Married Mary Ellen Bastin
at Bath, Somerset on 4th July 1896, and in 1911 they lived at 39 Sandhill Road, Ottery
St. Mary, Devon, with John working as a house painter. He died at Wareham Military
Hospital on 14th December 1915, aged 46, of pneumonia, and was buried in
grave No. B. B. 2 on the 17th.
SNOW Tom Cyril Captain Somerset Light Infantry also Tank Corps and Labour Corps .
Born in Hereford, Herefordshire on 16th November 1891 son of Tom Legg Snow, a Great
Western Railway clerk, and his wife Emily Eliza Brown, who lived at 1 Oriel Terrace,
Western Super Mare. On 11th July 1907 aged 15 Tom Jnr. also started working for G.W.R.
at Cheddar through to 26th February 1911 when he resigned. I don't know if he then
joined H.M. Army, but in July 1918 he married Edith Maude Cox at Exeter, Devon. She
lived at The White Hart Hotel, Okehampton, Devon. He died at Worgret Camp Military
Hospital, Arne, Dorset on 10th July 1919, but cause of death not found, and was
buried in grave No. C. E. 15 on the 14th. Probate to Edith on the 26th September
1919 was for £154 14s. 7d.
SOUTH Walter Burns Campbell Captain Middlesex Regiment attached to Tank Corps.
Born in Windsor, Berkshire on 9th June 1877 son of Walter South, a railway engine
driver, and his wife Annie Elizabeth Cowans Campbell. He married Maude Mary Bailey
at Fulham, London in July 1900, and in 1901 and 1911 was a clerk working for the
General Post Office in West London. Army records show he was Company Quarter Master
Sergeant for 3rd/8th Middlesex Regt. before being commissioned on 29th June 1915.
He died of pneumonia at Worgret Military Hospital, Arne, Dorset on 13th October 1918
and was buried in grave No. B. E. 2 on the 17th. His probate to widow Maude on 12th
March 1919 for £412 11s. 4d gave his address as 120 Windemere Road, South
Ealing, London. CWGC gave her address as Alpha Cottage, Park Road, Swanage, Dorset.
STEPHENS Claude Ralph Private No. 2151 43rd Battalion Australian Infantry A.I.F.
Born in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 25th April 1890 son of William Richard
Stephens who died in 1899, and his wife Caroline Snowball who died in 1908. He was
a farm labourer when he enlisted on 15th July 1916, and embarked to UK on 28th
August 1916 to be based at Wareham Camp, but he died of broncho-pneumonia in the
Military Hospital on 12th December 1916 and was buried in grave No. B. C. 12 on
the 15th. His next of kin was his sister Mrs Mary Ann Berck at Willmot Street,
Glanville, South Australia.
STEVENS Charles Ernest Sergeant No. 3/ 9231 10th Battalion West Yorkshire (Prince of Wales's Own) Regiment .
Born in Newport, Monmouthshire in about 1871, but although Army Effects said his
father was called Henry I have failed to pin down his family. I think in 1911 he
was single and a Corporal serving in India with the Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry.
His Army Effects record said he died at Wareham Camp of "Morbus Cordis" i.e. Heart
Disease on 7th March 1915 and was buried in grave No. A. AA. 9 on the 10th March.
TATTERSFIELD Neville 2nd Lieutenant "B" Battalion Tank Corps, previously Gunner No. 2300

He attended Heckmondwike Grammar School, and at some point enlisted in the M.M.G.S.
but was posted to France for tank training on 17th August 1916. He was thus involved
in the very first war battle using tanks at the Somme on 15th September 1916. His
tank was damaged but he survived. In April 1917 he was granted a commission as a
2nd Lt. then on 9th August 1918 he was wounded in his buttocks and arm by an exploding
shell. Operated on to remove shrapnel on the 20th he was then moved to UK to recuperate,
but caught Spanish Flu, then becoming widespread, admitted to Worgret Military Hospital,
Arne, Dorset on Nov. 11th he died there on 20th November 1918. He was buried in grave
No. B. E. 13 on the 22nd. His probate granted to his brothers John Brooke Tattersfield,
his wife Ada, and Clifford Tattersfield on 5th May 1919 was for £219 19s. 7d and
gave his address as 64 North Road, Ravensthorpe, Yorkshire.
TAYLOR Lily Edith Private No. W/ 242495 Auxiliary Territorial Service .
Born in Wareham about September 1923 daughter of William James Taylor, a labourer,
and his wife Mary Jessie Rawles who married at Wareham in August 1921. Lily died on
2nd September 1946 registered at Poole but I found nothing about the circumstances.

WALLIS Robert Francis Captain 12th Royal Warwickshire Regimen.
Born in Bywell, Northumberland about June 1863 son of Robert Wallis a landowner and
gentleman, and his wife Mary Webster who had married at Newark, Nottinghamshire in
1862. At some point in later 1880s (?) he travelled to South Africa, as on 8th June
1891 he married Josephine Mary Murray in Johannesburg, South Africa, but they
divorced in 1909. In 1911 Robert was a fruit and vegetable grower near Fareham
in Hampshire. An obituary for Robert's son Capt. Thomas Francis Wallis from
Tonbridge School says his father died suddenly of pneumonia on 10th July 1918
aged 56 and he was buried in grave No. C. C. 45 on the 12th. Probate was granted
on 15th August 1918 for £22,331 11s to his son Thomas, but he died fighting
